Azulon’s Portrait
Azulon’s head is surrounded by the Buddhist “Flames of Wisdom”, and he is standing on a tortoise symbolizing longevity.
Now there are not just one, but two jokes hidden in that painting:
1. The longevity. Yes, Azulon did live quite a long life, if my math is correct he had to be at least 90, but then he threatened Ursa’s kid… The joke comes in when you think about how his life ended.
2. The second one is the euphemistic meaning tortoises have in Chinese swearing. The tortoise is associated with promiscuity. Calling someone a tortoise (龟) can mean “tortoise; cuckold; (old) male owner of a brothel; pimp (王八)” or “pimp (龟公)”, “son of a bitch (王八蛋 )”.
It all makes sense once you take his charming personality into account. Remember what he suggested Ozai do to Zuko? Also: Li and Lo?
Li and Lo - Imperial Concubines
Or things that we can totally sneak past the censors if we never say them outright.
First, I’d like you to take a close look at the number of layers on Li and Lo’s robes: Three.
The only people we ever see wearing three layers like that is the Fire Lord and Iroh as General in the field (when he was still crown prince) i.e. high ranking Fire Nation royalty.
So what does that mean: Li and Lo have to be high ranking.
Zuko, even as crown prince
Ozai you dickonly gets two layers. The same goes for Azula.Yet Li and Lo are never addressed as family, no title of cousin, aunt, grandma etc. Iroh, on the other hand is frequently referred to as uncle, as is Lu Ten as cousin.
Neither do they seem to hold a court title. They are not Sifu Li and Lo, even though they supervise Azula’s firebending training. They are not addressed as minister or general or get any other title throughout the series but their names.
Taking into account their high rank, and how trusted they are, as well as the official duties (Like welcoming the prince and princess back) they have, the conclusion I have come to is that their title was omitted to sneak it past the censors.
Also noting that we get specifically told how hot they were when they were young, my conclusion is that they were Azulon’s concubines.
And later Ozai’s since traditionally in Imperial China the heir did inherit the concubines of his father XD
and then Azula, and then Zuko.Empress Wu (625-706)
Wu became a junior concubine at the age of twelve. When her Emperor died, she became the concubine of his successor, and later his Empress.
You are welcome. Kittens?

Ozai’s portrait
Ozai’s hands are shown in a double abhaya mudra. The abhaya mudra is a
“Gesture of Fearlessness” or “Blessing”. Which, I guess, form Ozai’s point of view makes a twisted kind of sense. He is blessing the world with the progress of industrialization, and later with fire …Ozai is standing on a lotus. The lotus flower does symbolize enlightenment in Buddhist teachings. Does that mean Ozai is supposed to be enlightened? Well, if you look closer you can see that his lotus is rooted in black flames and is covered in flames itself. If there is any enlightenment to be had it is through fire. Quite literally, if we take the finale into account.
Each Fire Lord’s portrait depicts their achievements during their reign. Sozin has the comet and his legacy (the history scroll), Ozai the cogs and furnaces of industrialization, as well as more flames than anyone else. Interesting, though, is that he is not depicted with the comet, even though it occurs during his reign and he plans to use it to conquer/destroy the world.

Asami was spot on in this conversation. As soon as the kiss is brought up Mako immediately tries to back peddle and find a way out. He wonders how she found out and becomes pissed off it was Bolin. Instead of apologizing, or even admitting it was true and grovelling for forgiveness, Mako gets annoyed. The dude is fucking work of art. How we are supposed to support him I will never know.
Asami rightly points out that he should not be trying to shift the moral blame of the convo onto his brother. He was the one who was kissing Korra and yet he won’t even admit it, let alone apologize. Mako was trying to deflect blame at this point and Asami stopped him right there. I thought this was the worst he could get in this episode, I was wrong.
The last scene confirmed everything I dislike about Mako. He is no longer being oblivious to leading these two girls on, he knows what is at stake and shows no qualms in putting his arm around Korra and leading her away in front of a disappointed Asami. The guy is a douche, plain and simple. It’s a shame that Korra isn’t like ‘what the fuck are you doing, aren’t you with Asami’, but she probably is just a bit distracted what with the bloody war. Mako on the other hand knows exactly what is going on now, and he’s made his choice. No apologies, no explanations, nothing. He wants Korra this week and he doesn’t even have the decency to break up with his girlfriend. Nice one, dude!

Words cannot express how much I love this video.
This gave me feelings. Not only is Bolin standing up for Asami, but the poor kid didn’t even really know his own dad. Mako was his father figure for most of his life. The thought of someone having a horrible father is worse to him than not having a father at all. This wasn’t just one of his goofy lines, not simply him stating the obvious for giggles. This was Bolin being Bolin, the caring and friendly guy he’s been from day one. Always standing up for what’s right, always protecting his friends, always giving me ridiculous feelings. There was just so much layered in this one line. He might not say much, but when he does, Bolin delivers.
